Well, you'll want to work with a coach or professional to ensure a clear, unbiased view of your progress, as well as helping you customize any strategies you choose so that you work for you. This is an area where one size doesn't really fit all.
- Work With A Clear Vision -- craft a compelling goal that can guide you like a north star. You have to know where you're going.
- Perfect Your Personal Story -- Authenticity comes from speaking from your soul. For people to listen and believe and be inspired, you will want to be able to tell your story in a concise and powerful way.
- Specificity Is Your Friend -- Pick your area of expertise carefully. It should be something you care personally about, have deep expertise in, and be specific enough that you can gain some notoriety in it.
- Know Your Audience -- Develop a thorough understanding of the people who care about your topic area/industry. Are there already influencers? What do they talk about? What gets the audience/community excited?
- Work A Plan -- With your coach, figure out the tactics that you will execute to make your way towards your goal.
- Give As Much As You Get -- Don't just be a taker, but contribute to the conversation around your topic area. Share other people's thinking, give credit, read other people's content. Give back.
- Refine Your Voice -- Get your voice out there and find ways to publish your thinking.
If you're looking for specific tactics there are a lot of articles and blogs about that, but I'd say that these strategies could help you get to your own set of tactics for managing your brand.

Every entrepreneur will tell you that it takes hard work and persistence to be successful. In addition to loving what you do, continually learning from others and building a great team around you, one of the most important things you can do is build your personal brand and reputation.
When it comes to running a business, your reputation is the most valuable asset you own. It is what people say about you when you’re not around. It is what gives you a competitive advantage, and can help drive business and sales. And while you might have the bearings of an excellent business plan, the strategic nous and innovative vision, all this is rendered moot if you don’t have a good standing with your customers, employees and potential investors.
Here are my top five strategies to help you to build your personal brand on your path to being a successful entrepreneur.
1. Know who you are
2. Building relationships
3. Don’t be afraid to self-promote
4. Online presence
5. Reputation management is critical
Ultimately, you are creating a marque – not a name or an image. But rather, emotions, experiences, memories and perceptions. Your job is to create a brand that is recognizable and begs me to action. The other answers seem to suggest strategies for crafting a brand. You said, "MANAGE". That presumes control or the lack of it.
To control your personal brand really means three things:
1) Have a clear vision of who you are and what your brand is supposed to mean. Like, I'm the "Backyard Gardening Expert" or the "Westside Suburban Quick-sale Realtor". If you don't have that, there's little to manage.
2) Get your brand "out there" in all of the forms available to you. Internet, mailings, mass media, collateral, etc. When the message is clear & concise and frequency mounts, you'll gain traction and trust.
3) The "Management" then, is simply stepping back from time-to-time to judge how you are being perceived against your vision. Keep you messages consistent (not robotic) and you win.

Two key strategies that stand out:
1. Be consistent - your avatar is like your logo. Be consistent with it in how it looks and how you use it. Your "logo" will show up in places all over your social graph..places you didn't think existed, which is why being consistent is important.
2. Build Influence. Influence = reach*(brand x trust x expertise)
*reach is a multiplier
If you do those 2 things, your personal brand can have as much leverage online as a corporate brand. Good place to start managing your personal brand.
