To control your personal brand really means three things:

1) Have a clear vision of who you are and what your brand is supposed to mean. Like, I'm the "Backyard Gardening Expert" or the "Westside Suburban Quick-sale Realtor". If you don't have that, there's little to manage.

2) Get your brand "out there" in all of the forms available to you. Internet, mailings, mass media, collateral, etc. When the message is clear & concise and frequency mounts, you'll gain traction and trust.

3) The "Management" then, is simply stepping back from time-to-time to judge how you are being perceived against your vision. Keep you messages consistent (not robotic) and you win.

Two key strategies that stand out:

1. Be consistent - your avatar is like your logo. Be consistent with it in how it looks and how you use it. Your "logo" will show up in places all over your social graph..places you didn't think existed, which is why being consistent is important.

2. Build Influence. Influence = reach*(brand x trust x expertise)

*reach is a multiplier

If you do those 2 things, your personal brand can have as much leverage online as a corporate brand. Good place to start managing your personal brand.
