It’s quite exciting for me having the honor to answer this question!

There are many ways from paid to free by which you can improve (rank) your Fiverr gigs and get yourself a multitude of sales far beyond you can imagine.

While some people believe in outside-Fiverr promotion, a lot of people don’t subscribe to the idea as they think you can get sufficient sales to your Fiverr gigs without really going outside it.

In all, some basic things are essential to breaking even in your gigs. Starting from the point of setting up your gig to the point of getting your first sales you must pay 100% attention to the following:

1.) Your Gig Title: This is the first thing you need to get right to optimize your gig for better sales and for ranking well on the Fiverr search algorithm. Try to aim for a title that’s highly eye-catching, not more than 60 characters, contains one of your primary keywords/tags (you write this in Capital letter for the purpose of emphasis). 2.) Gig Description: A good gig description should be able to answer the following questions:

a.) Who are you?

b.) What level of skills and experience you have in your line of service?

c.) Why the buyer should hire you?

d.) What the buyer should be expecting when he/she hires you?

3.) Gig Tags: This is another vital area of optimization that you must keep in mind when creating your gig. Gig tags are the keywords or phrases that the buyers or people searching for your gig on Fiverr type into the Fiverr search box. For example, a person looking for an article writer will enter words such as article writer, article writing, web writer, content writer, blog writer, etc. Try and include all relevant keywords in your tags so that when anyone tries to search for a service, you’re offering on the Fiverr search box yours will be among those first ones that will come up.

4.) Gig Image: This is what epitomizes your gig. You can get someone on Fiverr to do one for you for five bucks, or you can design it yourself using a site called Logiciel de conception graphique étonnamment simple. Now, I will go to the main talk on how exactly you can improve your gig.

Note: The following ranking tricks I’m about to share with you can only be implemented once you’re done with the above setting guidelines.

I'm going to be brief with you here as I have spent much time already on the pre-setting steps you are to take to get things up and running. You don’t need to pay a dime to implement any of the ranking formulas I will be sharing with you, but you might want to fast track things by hiring someone on Fiverr to do them for you or if you think you wouldn’t be able to do them yourself.

Formule 1: Maintaining your ratings and positive review level.

This is the first thing you need to do without wish all other efforts will undoubtedly end up in sheer futility. You must always ensure you keep having at least 4.5 or 5-Star review in your entire gig. In fact, I would advise you aim for the later (5-Star review). This is very crucial and will enhance your sale without even doing any serious promotion. The simple trick to getting a better buyer’s review is by over-delivering and ensuring quality service delivery. No other side to this, believe me.

Formule 2: Fast Turnaround Time.

Always keep to the deadline for delivering your work. Ensure timely and clear communication with your buyers. Ask for clarification where necessary before starting the work and be available for their request any day any time.

Formula 3: Facebook Account.

As soon as you publish your gig, create a Facebook account and start sharing information about your gigs with your Facebook friends. You can go as far as creating a group and start sharing helpful information with your group’s members, but you shouldn’t overdo this as they mustn’t feel they’re being sold. Let them know they can get affordable services from your Fiverr gig and insert a link to your gig. You can use Google URL Shortener for this. Go to Google and search for Google URL Shortener.

Formula 4: Forums

The use of Forums in promoting your Fiverr can’t be over-estimated. You should try this, and you will be surprised at the level of exposure you can get for your gig. There are many forums out there that you can join, just ensure you read their rules and know what is obtainable in them before you start posting. Another thing is you should not start promoting your gig right away, but you should first start to share helpful information through your comment on those forums. By doing this, you will be seen as an authority in your niche who they can willingly follow and who they can entrust with their hard-earned money. To get relevant forums to join, simply go to Google and type “your gig niche + forum” e.g. Article Writing Forum.

Formula 5: Blog:

This is one my favorite methods of promoting my Fiverr gig. All you need to do is to create a free blog using Blogger.com - Créez un blog unique et magnifique. C'est facile et gratuit.. It’s very easy to use, and you can also get people to do it for you on Fiverr if you find it difficult. Once the blog is ready, get some relevant articles around your gig and post on it for people to see your sample work portfolios. This way, your buyers can easily get convinced about your skills and experience in what you claim you do on Fiverr once they land on your blog.

Formula 6: Favorite:

This is hidden secret of many top-rated Fiverr sellers, and as such you must not abuse it. By giving yourself favorite you can help increase your gig ranking fast on the Fiverr search engine. Go to a well-performing gig in your category, check the number of Favorites it has and give the same number of favorite to yourself (but you can't do this on a single day). The result for this though is not immediate but will manifest latest after 24 hours of implementing it. To locate the “Favorite” menu on your account, from the menu “Selling” click on Gigs and select “Preview” button from the drop down options that appear when you click on the down arrow at the very left end corner of the gig you want to rank.

Tips: To start giving yourself “Favorite”, keep refreshing the page and stop refresh immediately the “Favorite” tab changes to red then click on the Favorite tab and the number will start going up depending on the number of the favorite you need.

Formula 7: Tags:

Another great trick to improve your gig is by going through the top-rated gigs in your category or gigs which are in the same category as the one you want to rank on Fiverr and see what tags they’re using and just copy the same tags and title to replace yours. As for the title, you may need to modify your gig description to conform to the new gig title you’re copying from the top-rated gig.

I think with these formulas above you should be able to improve your Fiverr gig fast.

How to increase sales in Fiverr

Here are my strategies for getting buyers:

  1. Max out your available gigs. Depending on your seller level (1st, 2nd, TRS), you are allowed a certain number of gigs. Whatever service you can deliver, make a gig for it. Are you good at blogging? Make a gig for it. Can you get in front of a smartphone and record a video testimonial? Make a gig for it.
  2. Stay involved with Fiverr. The forum is a great way to get your name out there and make friends. Sometimes, friends from the forum will buy your gig and when other potential buyers see that you sell a lot, they will know you have a great gig to purchase.
  3. Upload a head shot for your profile photo. Buyers want to see a real person and not a company logo.
  4. Fill out all of your experience on the seller sidebar. You can add your college degrees for example. Some buyers like purchasing from sellers who have an education.
  5. Once you get a few sales, always always always over-deliver and provide great customer service so you get 5-star ratings and good reviews. Buyers look for that before they purchase.

You need to do 3 things.

  1. Create attractive and unique gig
  2. Promote it
  3. Provide a best service.

When you are creating a gig, find a niche that you are good at and create the gig about it. As an example if you are good about graphic designing, create 2 - 3 gigs regards logo design, cover page design, etc. This will lead more traffic than one graphic design gig providing both services.

Use social media to promote your gig. You can promote it on facebook,twitter, google plus etc. Further join discussion forums talking your area of expertise and answer questions from people. Then you can add your signature with the link to the gig on that answers. Do not provide spam answers and put it everywhere, it will recognise you as a marketer but not valuable member of the community.

From the first message you receive from the buyer, make them feel you are special. Reply fast, answer all questions from them, describe what you are going to give them, etc. Once you received the order, complete it as soon as you can. Try to delight the buyer and make sure 5 star feedback. If you are going to giving average work and beg for 5 star feedback, it will not work.

You’ve hit publish on your first post and the hard part is now done…

Well not quite. As you’re now learning for yourself, driving traffic is the real challenge with running a blog.

Especially if you’re hoping to profit from it in any sustainable manner for the months and years to come.

Quick Disclaimer: Unlike most answers to your question here, my answer is not peddling an online course that’ll teach you how to drive traffic to your blog (for what always seems to be just 3 easy payments of $97). I’m not linking out to sales pages on my blog and I’m not asking you to download a free eBook about driving traffic, only to be upsold on buying a course next week. This is simply everything that I personally do to drive an average of 200,000+ monthly visitors to my blog about side hustles & freelancing—and generate six figures from that traffic each year.

So if you’re still with me, where were we?

That’s right. You’ve started a blog, now you need traffic.

If you’re feeling anything like how I felt when I first started blogging, I’m guessing this about sums up the look of waiting for readers to roll in…

Over the past few years, I’ve learned a lot about how ne pas to drive traffic to a blog. I tried a lot of stuff that didn’t really work.

“Tactics” and “strategies” like:

  • Embauchons Sociétés de référencement to try and get (merdique) backlinks to build my site’s authority.
  • Submitting contributor request forms to become a writer on major business publications like Forbes, Entrepreneur and Inc. (That didn’t work, but I’ll tell you about what did work and how I now write for these three sites).
  • Posting every new article from my blog into dozens of LinkedIn & Facebook groups (which got me banned from several of them).
  • Cold emailing my blog posts to influenceurs and asking them to share with their audience.
  • Optimizing for publishing at le parfait heure de la journée.
  • Technical tweaks to my site’s WordPress theme that promised quicker page load times, faster rendering of images, minimizing JS queries and so on.
  • Ultra-fast (expensive) hébergement.

All of these tactics netted little to no results in my first year of blogging.

I wasn’t getting any backlinks from the person I hired on Upwork to do blogger outreach, promoting my posts to other site owners. I never heard back after submitting request forms, asking to be considered as a contributor from sites like Forbes and Entrepreneur.

Spamming online communities and LinkedIn groups only dug me into a deeper hole of self-doubt after getting shut down and booted from many of these groups. Influencers ignored my emails and no matter what time of day I published my new posts, there didn’t seem to be any impact on traffic.

People just weren’t reading my blog.

After my first year of blogging, all I really had to show for it were a few hundred monthly readers and around 100 email subscribers. Most of whom I personally knew.

Hardly a dent in the kind of numbers I’d need in order to turn blogging into a profitable business.

I couldn’t figure out where I was going wrong… these were all the strategies and tactics I’d been reading about from marketing gurus and seeing other bloggers post about all the time.

So I tried something radical.

I decided to stop the bullshit tactics and ask my readers what they wanted.

I personally emailed all ~100 people who I knew read my blog and asked them what they liked, what they hated and what they wanted more of from my blog.

That’s it. 3 ridiculously simple questions.

The answer: My small number of readers ALL loved when I published extremely personal, vulnerable, self-deprecating deep dives on my adventures in business.

They liked the success stories, but they LOVED the painful failures (like ici).

The rest of my content? Eh, they could take it or leave it, so I decided to leave it.

I began uniquement. writing about topics I had personal experience with.

That made me much more credible (and relatable) to my readers.

I was no longer just sharing my slightly adjusted take on established best practices for freelancers who want to get more clients—I started diving deep into my own experience with landing freelance clients and sharing from behind-the-scenes of what that actually looks like. Screenshots, video tutorials, step-by-step guides to writing cold emails, free templates for pitching clients and so on.

I went into a level of depth that not many other bloggers were exploring with in my niche. AND it is all based on what I actually do, not just recycled advice from other content that’s already out there.

Fast forward little more than a year after making that change and I was driving almost 200,000 monthly readers to my blog.

Here’s where my blog is today: 165,942 session last month (April 2017).

That’s a down month.

Let’s talk about the strategies I used to actually get to 200,000 monthly readers.

How to Increase Your Blog Traffic (What Really Works, Not Recycled Advice)

  1. Go Deep. It’s easier to sell gold, than it is to sell shit. There’s no shortage of 500 - 1,000 word articles offering you the 10 quick steps to achieving xyz out there, and that type of content has already become a commodity. Want to stand out from the crowd and making a lasting impression? Create content that’s truly great in some capacity (the easiest is to go for a level of depth that others in your industry haven’t done) and your promotion will be made 100x easier. If everyone in your space is publishing 500 word conseils posts, and you come into the arena with a 5,000 word step-by-step guide style post that actually helps readers create change as a result of reading your post, you’ll have a much greater chance of getting your post to go viral. Plus in the long game, Google (actuellement, en ce moment) rewards more in-depth, longer content with a better shot at ranking well in organic search.
  2. Obey the 80/20 Rule of Content Promotion. I spend 80% of my time distributing my content, and 20% on the actual writing. While the quality of writing (or videos, infographics, etc) is very important for setting your content up for success, in practice it’s only a small component of the traffic equation. Let’s say you publish an incredible post that you’re really proud of. What happens next? Well, unless you have thousands of readers on your email list, following your RSS feed or your blog already has an extremely high domain authority, that new post isn’t going to get any readers. It’ll just sit there. And that’s where distribution—strategically promoting your content to drive new readers—comes in to play. Let’s take a look at a few distribution channels I use:
    1. Influencer Quotes: During my research phase for the post I’m writing (before it’s published), I’ll cold email at least 5 influencers who are seen as an authority on the topic my post is covering. I’ll ask them a single question, requesting a quote to include in my upcoming post on the topic. Some respond, some don’t. This post on my blog breaks down the exact cold email scripts I use to get influencers like Robert Herjavec, Tim Ferriss and Tony Robbins to respond to my emails.
    2. Strategic Pre-Linking: Before hitting publish on my content, I’m always looking for opportunities to mention brands, publications and high-profile individuals within my content. I aim for at least 10–20 of these types of mentions, references or pull quotes. Then, once my post goes live, I have an immediate list of companies/people to reach out to and ask let know about their feature on my blog. I ask primarily for social shares on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn since my goal is to build relationships that can be leveraged for more in the future. When it’s the right time, I’ll come back and ask if they’ll take a guest post from me, if they’d like to syndicate a version of that original post that mentioned them, and explore any other promotion opportunities that come up.
    3. Communautés en ligne: Stick to promoting your new posts only in online communities that explicitly allow (and encourage) content promotion. And if you’re not an active participant there auparavant you show up wanting to promote your articles, take some time to genuinely engage with people before starting to promote your own content. Have the patience and show some respect for the people that are investing time building up the strength of these communities—spend at least a week, popping in once or twice a day to comment on other people’s posts, ask thoughtful questions (without links to your articles), and share useful content within your niche. THEN you’ll start to build a rapport that’ll afford you the opportunity to begin humbly sharing your best articles.
  3. Guest Post. This is deserving of an entire guide, but here’s the basic principle of Pourquoi guest posts can drive massive amounts of traffic to your blog: You’re getting your content in front of (hopefully the right) existing audiences instead of waiting around for people to somehow discover your blog. You’re taking control of your own promotion efforts. They’re well-known as an established resource on all things content marketing, and many people who are searching for talented help in this field will be browsing through contributors to this publication. By making yourself present here, you’ll lift your visibility. On top of that, CMI has a very large readership so you can expect certains traffic back to your blog… but as Des études ont montré, traffic is an unpredictable metric to track against guest posts. Your real win from guest posting is getting high domain authority backlinks, pointing to your blog—which increases the authority and reputation of your website (in they eyes of Google). The higher the number of credible websites pointing your direction, the more Google will reward your content with better organic search rankings… which equates to increased traffic to your blog (in the long run).

I could go on forever, as I’m always learning, growing & adapting—as are the ways in which you’ll be able to increase traffic to your blog.

We didn’t even talk about YouTube (the second largest search engine in the world), becoming a regular contributor on top industry publications, investing in building an engaged following on social platforms like Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

There’s a lot of noise out there.

Find your 1 thing that works for now and double down on it until it’s not working anymore. Then move on to the next channel.

Always focus on what matters: Your community.

Everything else comes from there.

In the end, all the strategies, tactics and best practices in the world don’t matter as much as your connection to your readers. Even if that’s literally 5 people today.

Build a relationship with them. Give them content that’s truly transformative. Help them get real results by consuming and acting upon your content.

Spread out, reaching into their social networks by asking them to share content that’s had an impact on them with their communities.

From there, you’ll start to grow organically.

That’s how you create a movement around your blog.

Oh yeah… and traffic will come from EVERYWHERE if you can create a movement.

  1. Post regularly - it is a must! People like to know that they can regularly read something new on your website. Keep it alive!
  2. Write an e-book, do a webinar, organize an online course, a live session - it’s always good to give something to your audience. They will repay with love, shares, and engagement. Also, it let you create your own personal brand as an expert, and this is priceless!
  3. Build a database of e-mail addresses - this way you would be able to stay in touch with your audience. It’s a good idea to give them something for subscribing, for example, an e-book ��
  4. Utiliser les médias sociaux - find places where your target audience is active, set up a fanpage, g+ profile. Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter account. But choose wisely and be there where your audience already is to meet them instead of wasting time and trying to get them there.

First off, ensure that the ON PAGE SEO is done right. This includes your meta data, header tags, redirections, 404 page, robots.txt, site structure etc.

Second is your off page SEO combined with blogging.

You can get heaps of benefit by blogging and gain more traffic organically if things are done right.

Here are a couple of things I would do to help my website gain more traffic -

  • Blog about narrowed down topics as opposed to more generic topics. This gives you more chances of ranking higher for a lot more keywords. Ex - a generic topic would be 'what is marketing and why you need it?' and a narrowed down topic would be 'how can you use SEO to gain more traffic'
  • See what people are looking for. Answer their questions in your blog. If you are blogging about radio but trends say that people are interested in television more than it would be best to blog about Television.
  • Use keyword suggestions from Google. When you put a search in Google, it often gives you a couple of instant suggestions. These are the most popular and recent searches done by searchers. I use a formula where i combine all these keywords and then use it for blogging.
  • Share you blogposts on social networks such as Twitter and use appropriate hashtags where possible. Hashtags are great to gain more visibility in social media.
  • Planning - a lot actually comes down to planning. You must prepare a schedule to gain consistency and avoid any distractions for your blogging.
  • Combine blogging with link acquistion. You would be surprised that writing blogs can yield so much that your rankings can get stronget and better by properly strategizing it. I have gained links from sites that are trusted by Google just with the help of content that was created in blogs.

This obsession eats up minutes, hours and weeks of time, spent poring over your stats, how you are doing, why you are failing, why you are succeeding, worrying, failing, fretting, getting angry, winning, celebrating, and all that stuff associated with the action of “getting.”

When you spend 0.05% of your time on getting, you spend 99.95% of your time giving, through the methods noted above.

If you give freely you will get freely (traffic and profits) over the long haul.

I have built an inspired life by focusing almost exclusively on giving and by spending almost no time checking traffic and income stats.

Why Check Stats Anyway?

True; you can figure out where you are heading by checking stats here and there. Perhaps you change course based on traffic or income stats.

But spending minutes, let alone hours, obsessing over stats means little, anyway.

Saying how much you make or how much traffic you get leads to fear-based, lower energy comparisons. Or in laymen’s terms, you either think you are better than other bloggers, worse then other bloggers or ho hum average, like other bloggers, by checking and analyzing stats.

Why feel better than, worse than or ho hum average, compared to other bloggers? This is a waste of time and devotes your energy to getting, when your energy should be focused on giving, 99.99% of the time.

Even worse; sharing your income and stats frequently attracts greedy or desperate bloggers. These folks only want to get; they have little interest in giving. Not exactly your ideal reader.

Infrequent Checking

Check stats once monthly, if you check them much at all.

Infrequent checking helps you devote virtually all of your energy to giving because when you starve the obsession with getting, all that remains is writing blog posts, answering questions on Quora, writing guest posts, promoting other bloggers through social media and featuring other bloggers on your blog.

As you imagine by now, bloggers obsessed – in a good way – with giving drive increasing amount of traffic to their blogs.

Devote Virtually all of Your Attention to Giving

If you give virtually none of your time to getting you will give almost all of your time to giving.

  1. For clarification purposes: what country are you from? I'm from the US, so college is "university," and "high school" is 14-18 years old. You say you're 16, and honesty is important; I'm guessing it's a cultural difference.

A primer on your height & what you can do about it

Your height is determined between 60%-85% by your genetics. The remainder of that is environmental, primarily nutrition1. If you're malnourished during your growing years you won't reach your full potential. If you get enough nutrition you'll likely reach your genetically predetermined height, possibly a little taller.

There is some indications that getting enough protein through your developmental years can add to your height positively. In Japan after the war, the population had access to more fish protein and the average height of the country increased 3 inches2. Denmark has become one of the tallest countries in the world, and it's rise in height is strongly correlated to it's wealth per capita .3 The most likely take away here is that people that can afford to eat, and eat well, will be taller over generations. It’s easy to make this connection between these two long term correlations. Nutrition can slowly cause an increase in height between generations. It's no guarantee that you'll be taller through eating, but proper nutrition through your formative years, can add a bit onto your genetics. A good, balanced diet of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates -- eat food, not too much, mostly plants -- you'll do fine.

They've been doing some research on fraternal twins to try to determine what the specific gene is that determines height. The reason that they're looking at fraternal twins rather than identical twins is that their exact DNA is different but most of the environmental factors are the same (what the mother ate while they were pregnant, probably how they were treated after they were born, etc). They can then compare the genomes of the twins after they reach their height and see what is different between them. They do this for thousands of fraternal twin pairs to determine which parts of their genomes are different. As of writing this they think it's partly in the X chromosome and chromosomes 7, 8, and 20. Scientists haven't narrowed it down entirely, genes are pretty complex and it's not as simple as it's explained in your general science classes with recessive genes and dominant genes.4

How to increase your height

As you grow up, your bones get longer. Everyone has Epiphyseal plates at the ends of their bones. As you grow, these plates are added onto. When you go through growth spurts, particularly puberty, they are added onto rather quickly. Some people experience growing pains in their bones as they expand. When you're done growing (mostly by the time you're 18-25), your bones Ossify, the epiphyseal plates seal themselves, and you stop growing taller and longer. At that point you're done. No more growing. That's it.

How do I know if my Epiphyseal plates have sealed?

I’m going to quote this answer: Thomas Johnson's answer to How do you know when your epiphyseal plates are sealed (disregarding age)? (Please go and up vote his answer if you find this portion illuminating)

When looking at an x-ray of your limbs, look for the line between the diaphysis (shaft of the long bone) and epiphysis (rounded articulation/ where the joint lies). Here is a picture of the epiphyseal plates of the distal tibia and fibula in an ankle:

You can easily see the dark line above both "ankles" or malleoli. These are the epiphyseal plates you are looking for. Here is a picture when the "growth plates" are "sealed":

You can see the white line on both sides of the knee, known as an epiphyseal scar. The white line means the area is more dense, whereas the dark line from before means it is the less dense, growing cartilaginous tissue. If the white line exists, it means the epiphyseal plate has "closed" and no additional bone will grow from the cartilage.

Daily fluctuations

Your height actually decreases slightly through the day. In between your spinal disc s there are fluid sacs. When you stand up your head and shoulders put axial pressure on your spine and cause these sacs to compress. You can shrink by as much as 1% of your height this way (this will not accumulate beyond 1%, 1% is the most you will lose, even by standing up for a month straight) .

Simply lying down will allow them to expand again.

This isn't a big deal, though there are several sites out there than claim otherwise and claim that they can create extra space between your spinal bones. Additionally there are claims that stretching and hanging can increase your height. This is a quarter true. Hanging and stretching can reverse the compression, making you slightly taller until your spine compresses again. Spinal compression can reduce your height temporarily by 1%. In tall people this can be as much as a half inch. Stretching and hanging and lying down can restore this 1%, but won't make you taller.5

For this same reason, astronauts can be as much as 2" taller in space. There's not enough gravity putting axial pressure against their spine to compress it. Additionally, the fluid pressure in the sacs can exceed any forces pressing against them allowing astronauts to expand past that 1%. When they come back to earth, they return to their normal height over the course of months.6

Your height and sports

Because of the growth plates, and the fact that your spine can compress, people got the idea that weightlifting and high impact sports could cause you to not grow as much. They're not quite right. There has been no evidence that weightlifting can stop your growth7 . The origins of weightlifting being a thing that stunted your growth came from a couple of places, most recently a 1970s study of Japanese child laborers. The children that did work all day ended up shorter than average8. The truth behind the stunted growth is, of course, malnutrition. Child laborers worked long hours and didn't make much money...not nearly enough to feed themselves well.

Another reason people used to think weightlifting was bad for children was they didn't develop muscles like you do as an adult. Children don't have enough hormones yet for muscles to develop properly, but what weightlifting can do for them is put stress on the bones encouraging them to grow as well as help them develop their central nervous system allowing pathways to be created for them to do more work as they go into adulthood. A lot of lifting weights is in the head.

Recent studies have shown that weight lifting at any young age can help build bones and stave off obesity for children leading into their adulthood. Weight lifting at a young age has also been shown to prevent injuries and osteoporosis into old age.

Sports have a tendency to self select. I've seen so many questions:

These questions are based on the fact that professional basketball players are tall and well known swimmers are tall. The well known players are tall because being tall gives them a distinct advantage in these sports. I swam for 15 years, all through my growing years. I'm 5'7". It doesn't work like that. Further, basketball is pretty high impact. Short sprints, stops, starts, jumps. If someone thought weight lifting would stunt your growth, basketball would too for the same reasons. Every time you jump you put several times your body weight against your muscles and bones. Much more than you would be weightlifting at that age.

The same thing goes with gymnasts. They're not short because the sport makes them short, they're short because it's easier to be a great gymnast when you're short.9

But it's not quite as simple as that, either. Studies on female gymnasts revealed that in their youth, they show slowed height growth, primarily in their legs. When they stop doing gymnastics, they are able to reach their full potential...gymnasts who start young have decreased bone age compared to people who start later, when they quit, their spine height and legs grow more and fully catch up to where they are predicted to be based on genetics within 8 years of quitting. Men did not experience this at all. Through out their entire growth within the sport, they don't suffer from abnormal bone ages or strange growth patterns and actually end up being as tall as they should be based on genetics even while continuing the sport10. The gymnasts they analyzed reached their full genetic height under the conditions analyzed. Most of them were actually just supposed to be short -- their parents were short. It's mainly a correlative link between the sport and the height, possibly connected to nutrition.

Several other studies relating to particular sports (ballet, wrestling, distance running) linking to height issues. These sports, along with gymnastics, particularly for females, have rigorous training requirements limiting the time children have to eat. Additionally, the sports themselves put particular demands on the participants weight11. It's likely these growth impediments are due more to nutritional deficits rather than something intrinsic to the sport.

Studies performed on swimmers, gymnasts, and tennis players also support the corrélation to height but not causation because the participants are actually reaching their appropriate height, not exceeding it. As far as the sport goes, they're just self-selected for their height.

Sleep During Developmental

There have been a few studies that I was able to find relating to sleep patterns and growth. It's well known that when you sleep your body releases all sorts of hormones and most of your growth and recovery happens at this time.12 One would think that a lack of sleep would cause stunted growth.

For children aged 5-11 and 1-10 there were a couple studies done. One found a very weak negative correlation between sleep time and height. In neither study did the researchers concluded that the correlation was significant enough to say that sleep correlated with height growth at this age. 13 14

Other studies involving interviews over a couple of years with adolescents found that sleep problems were correlated with lower "puberty scores" (that tracks their development to adult-hood). However, an association between height and sleep wasn't noticed, but the researchers noted that more needed to be done [OP Note: I could be reading that wrong, It's possible it wasn't tracked at all, if someone knows better, let me know].15

Finally, and much more indicative of likely issues, A study performed on children diagnosed with sleep apnea showed their height was affected negatively by the apnea condition.16

Based on this research it looks like, based on the apnea research that there could be an issue related to height growth and a significant lack of sleep. In any case, based on the overall benefits of sleep, I'd recommend not skimping on sleep during your growth years, and getting checked out for apnée if you have noticed any of the symptoms.

Myths Concerning Growing Taller and Stunted Growth

There are tons of old wive's tales out there about strategies to grow taller. They might not all hurt you, but they sure won't help. If anyone has any studies that back up any of these strategies, I'd gladly move them from my myths section to my realities section:

  • Saut. How this is a thing I have no idea, particularly when you look at the myths (and realities) laid out earlier about gymnastics and weightlifting. If weightlifting makes you short (myth) and gymnastics makes you short (partially true, as detailed above), how would skipping (relatively high impact asymmetric leaping from one foot to the other) make you taller?
  • Sports like: Swimming, basketball, cycling, any others, making you taller, dispelled above. They're amazing activities and can help you grow stronger, faster, smarter, and build team work and leadership skills, but they won't make you taller.
  • Stretching and yoga. Things like "Growing Tall 4 idiots". They can help your posture, but as you're growing they won't add inches, they'll just help you express your height.
  • Hanging exercises. They'll decompress your spinal disks allowing you to gain as much as a half inch in the middle of the day, but the gains will only last a few hours.
  • Salt in your shoes.
  • Prier et un vœu pieux. They might make you feel better, but you won't get taller as a result.
  • Miracle pills -- things like Ayurvedic Urea, Ayurvedic "Step Up". L'huile de serpent is a unsubstantiated claim applied to medicines and supplements. Even actual Ayurvedic practitioners will tell you that there is nothing in any Ayurvedic textbook on height increase. All height increase supplements are snake oil.
  • Particular diets and foods (milk, etc) will make you taller. While eating enough is essential to realizing your full potential, there's no evidence that any particular food will have more effect than anything else. There's also no evidence that other animal's growth hormones (like trace amounts of bovine growth hormone in milk) will help you grow taller or stronger. The only diet you need is one that contains a good balance of carbs, proteins, fats, and contains all the vitamins and minerals you need.
  • Particular foods will stunt your growth. Il est NO evidence that coffee stunts your growth17. Diet coke does not stunt your growth18. The major problems with diet drinks and coffee are that they contain very little in the way of nutrients and can fill up a kid's stomach. Plus, caffeine can be used as an appetite suppressant. All of this adds up to a child not getting enough nutrients. Sodas aren't great because they're packed with sugar. While you need sugar, you don't need the amount a couple sodas give you, and you need other nutrients just as much: proteins, fats, vitamins and electrolytes like potassium and calcium. I kept my kids away from these drinks to keep their appetite going so they have enough room to eat.
  • That particular activities like weight lifting will stunt your growth, as mentioned above.
  • Exercise releases HGH which will help you grow. Studies on this phenomenon have shown that HGH release through exercise only has an effect on the localized areas that are exercised. Lifting legs releases much more GH than lifting arms. If you work legs and arms in the same day, it will not make your arms stronger than if you lift your arms by themselves even though your body is coursing with GH19. There is no reason to think that your height will be affected by GH released through exercise for that reason and there is no evidence to back up that claim. Exercise and weight lifting during puberty is a great thing, it could possibly set you up to be much stronger and healthier throughout your life...just not taller.

    Further, the HGH release through exercise is about 100 times less than it is during normal puberty. The notion that nanoliters of GH per liter of blood can make a substantial difference in comparison to milliliters of GH per liter of blood is outrageous.

What can actually be done about your height?

There are few things that can be done, and most of these treatments are only responsibly given in cases of abnormalities. As stated above, the best thing you can do is strive to be as tall as you can naturally be by eating properly through your childhood. As mentioned above, by eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein, carbs, and fat, you may be able to exceed genetic expectations by a small amount -- possibly more over several generations of proper eating. Exercise and sports can be helpful in keeping you healthy and generating strong bones, but in the end it won't make you taller than your genes say you will be.

Hormone treatment

Occasionally, there comes along a case where a child is short, inexplicably (this is known as Idiopathic Short Stature). When you bring a short kid into see the doctor, they'll eliminate diet first. Most of the time if the child isn't eating right and then they start eating properly, they'll shoot right up. Some cases, the kid is eating right, but they just aren't growing. To qualify for these cases you usually have to be in the bottom 3rd percentile of your age but you should be higher, based on genetic predictors. In those cases HGH treatments have shown that they can grow over 9 centimeters over the adjusted predictions, sometimes reaching the predicted height based on heredity, sometimes not. 20 If this is the case for you, see a doctor and ask them about it. They'll usually do tests to determine if your body isn't generating enough hormones. If it is generating enough, a responsible doctor won't give you more.

It should be noted that HGH treatments for otherwise healthy children does not result in substantial or necessarily any additional height grow and could have adverse effects like predisposition to diabetes, cancers, and scoliosis.

There is also a condition known as Laron’s syndrome where your body is HGH resistant. This can be treated with Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), but is only effective if administered before puberty.21 22

Getting these conditions diagnosed and treated can add several inches to your effective height, making you appear the height that you are.

Posture

Additionally, a lot of people experience bad posture. Later in life you won't grow taller, but if you get in the gym, start being active and focus on standing up straight and tall you can fully express your height. There's no special exercise you need to do (back exercises can help like Straight Leg Dead Lifts) but it's more a focus on being active and standing tall.

  • Keep your head level, looking forward, not up or down.
  • Chest out
  • Shoulder blades back and tucked down, like you're trying to make your neck longer
  • Slightly flexed abs for support
  • Pelvic floor neutral

Intervention chirurgicale

There is a controversial, expensive, painful, high risk surgery with a very long recovery time called Distraction osteogenesis. They break your tibia and fibula then affix a device to keep them separated:

You while this is taking place you cannot put weight on your bone and you have to undergo 1-2 hours of physical therapy daily to keep the bones from getting stiff. This process can take months to complete. After the new bone is formed there is another 6 months strengthening time period where you need to carefully strengthen the bone without the lengthening device. The entire process can take as long as 2 years. Even after all that there are dozens of complications:

  • The new bone may not form solidly and there's a good chance of breakage within 2-3 months
  • The new bone may not form in the proper angle
  • You might not grow the expected 2-3 inches
  • Your leg lengths may not be even afterwards
  • An infection can be catastrophic
  • Nerve damage could cause you to lose the leg entirely.

Usually the only time they do this surgery is to correct cases where one leg is significantly shorter than the other. Because of the recovery process any credible doctor will have the patient go through a psych evaluation prior to the surgery to validate that they can handle the recovery process. Personally, it sounds dangerous, risky, and pointless. 23

Start now and be patient.

While the exact algorithm used to generate your credit score is proprietary and not entirely understood by the general public, some basic guidelines will help you improve and maintain it.

It also depends on what your current score is. Going from 500 to 550 is probably easier that to go from 750 to 800.

Pay your debts on time. Always. Make sure the minimum payment is made when due.

Putting money aside is nice, but if you generate .05% interest in a savings account while your credit card balance costs you 30% interests, you’re not going anywhere. Gather all you have and pay your debts.

Keep your debt ratio as low as possible. Even if you have a $5k limit on your CC, try not using more than 10–20% of that limit.

Make more money and declare everything. That little extra you made from a side job might be going away in tax, but it improves your debt/income ratio.

Stop spending on stuff you don’t need. It all adds up and, in the end, you will be richer. Banks like that.

If you do not have a credit card yet, get one and start using your credit wisely. Capital One comes to mind. Other companies may also offer cards for which you are most likely to be aproved. Having a good credit history is crucial.

There is no magic recipe. It’s simple, but it takes time. And that’s the point: loaners need to see you can be disciplined and trusted with money over a certain period of time. Not going out during a weekend is easy. Achieving a high credit score requires constant parsimony or, at least, discipline.

The high credit score says you can be patient and build something bigger than your short term impulsive “needs”. It’s also something that took so much effort to get to that you are not willing to ruin it by skipping a payment. Banks know that and it’s why they’re more likely to trust you.

Honestly? I can tell you honnêtement that at the moment we are sure of two things:

  1. You have a website
  2. It's not perfect

Because it's not perfect, it's losing customers and therefore your conversion rates are plummeting. Uh-oh. The biggest mistake a website owner can make is assuming that the statu quo of their website is OK and they do not need to change a single thing.

That's the stupidest thing one can think.

So, it's not perfect, we got that established. We need to improve the website and increase the conversion rates. How to do that?

There is A/B testing1 - once you get to know it better, you'll be eager to start a test. You will start reading articles about CRO and get some ideas for the test - change the colour of your CTAs, start using material design, optimize the labels, tons of them.

The cold truth is that an idea for a test pulled out of your a... out of an article is an absolute waste of time. There are too many variables, which are unique to your website that findings coming from one website won't be suitable for yours.

Is A/B testing bad, then? No, absolutely not - you only need to be smart about coming up with your hypotheses.

You can get data out of Google Analytics - bounce rates on certain webpages, traffic drops, exit rates surges and so on - these give you a general idea that something bad is happening on your website.

It's getting trickier once you have to figure out what exactly. Usually, it takes an expert with experience to spot the possible problems. You can hire one - it's costly, but effective. If your budget is lower, then I have one possible solution - visual analytics.

I will not focus on some of the “hygiene” related suggestions. For example, does your landing page have a clear call to action. Does it have too much content that can overwhelm your customers? Does your webpage load quickly and properly across all devices. Once you have taken care of the basic optimizations, here are some other things to try:

  1. Personalize the content based upon search keyword: There is a wealth of information available in a user’s search keywords ,and you should make every effort to personalize the landing page based upon the search queries. Imagine you run an eCommerce website that sells vacation packages. If someone searches for “Luxury family friendly hotels in Hawaii” in Google and visits your website, you know that this customer is a “premium” customer who probably travels with a family and has interest in tropical vacations. Your entire website content including homepage could be personalized based upon these attributes. Of course you can't do this for thousands of keywords that bring customers to your website, but you can start building “personas” based upon your top search queries and make sure that your website experience speaks directly to that persona. You can even save this “contextual” information about your customers in your database so when you reach out to them in future, you can speak the language they are more likely to respond to. Instead of sending a one size fits all newsletter about “Top 10 Vacation ideas”, you could send them an email about “Top Luxury All Inclusive Resorts” because they came to your website with that search keyword.
  2. Change the Context based upon referring site: Your customer’s referring website is also extremely important in maximizing conversions. Imagine you run an eCommerce site, and some of your customers come from Display Advertising, while some other customers come from affiliate channels such as slickdeals.com. If your customers came from an affiliate channel such as slickdeals.com, it is highly likely that the customer is interested in deals and discounts. So when they visit your product listing pages, you could automatically sort the products by “Highest Discount first”, instead of sorting the products by “New Arrivals” for example. However, if another set of customers came from display advertising, where you are targeting more “affluent” customers, you could sort the product listings by “New Arrivals” to show off your current season assortment. Again, its about building personas for your customers and showing the most relevant content that can convert them to buyers.
  3. Keep a close eye on Bounce Rate: If you have a high bounce rate, it means there is disconnect between your landing page and your customer expectations. It could be because your landing page is not convincing enough, or the pricing information is not easily available, or the products are out of stock. Taking steps to reduce your bounce rate can directly improve the relevance of your landing page, and therefore, can improve the conversions. While there is no single industry benchmark, if your bounce rate is more than 40%, then you likely have opportunities to address.
  4. Defer asking information from your customers: If you force your customers to provide too much information too early, they would leave. If you ask them unnecessary information, they will likely leave. If you are collecting Birthday, Gender, or any other information that has nothing to do with your customer’s order, please do not ask it before they have placed the order. You can have a simple form, immediately after your Thank you page, to collect additional information. Customers would be happy to share some more information if they had a good experience in placing the order. But if you ask too much of that information upfront and make the checkout flow more cumbersome, they might get too overwhelmed and leave.
  5. Make sure there is a direct correlation between your Ads and Landing page: This may sound very basic, but I can’t emphasize the important of this point enough. You must review every single Search Ad, and every single Display Ad for your business, and then click on the landing page for that Ad. Then put yourself in the customer’s shoes. Does the landing page deliver on the promise that was made in the Ad? Imagine your customer has 40 seconds to decide whether or not its worth staying on your website. Does the landing page convey enough relevant information within 40 seconds, to convince the customer to stay and explore your website? Your website may have great products at the most competitive prices but if the landing page talks about apples when your ad is promising oranges, your customers will leave.

Conversion optimization is an ongoing journey, and you will never reach the destination. The key is to leverage as much data as possible from sources such as Google Analytics, and continue to optimize your website experience so that it speaks directly to the customer who came to your website. All customers are different and there is no reason why your website or your landing page have to speak the same language to every customer.

We pretty much know already what is needed to significantly extend both lifespan and health-span, in essence it’s a question of putting everything together to achieve a comprehensive level of rejuvenation, after all there is not much point in rejuvenating around half the body only to then suffer a life threatening event due to the other half letting the side down! As far as the timeframe I would say we have a 60% chance in bringing aging under a decisive degree of medical control within not less than 10 years but not more than 25, and a 90% or better chance this century. We only need a few more breakthroughs such as CRISPR-cas9 (first used for gene editing in 2013), Stem Cell therapies such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) which can now be created easily because in 2012, iPSCs were first made from renal epithelial cells in the urine where previously creation was more invasive or dependent on using embryonic stem cells, add in senescent cell clearance (another recent discovery) and it’s clear we are well on our way.

The key to all this probably lies in defining what aging is because that is the reason that currently we can't live for significantly longer or even hundreds of years more than we currently do. Understanding this point clarifies what we need to do to bring aging under control so here is my definition - Aging is the progressive and inexorable accumulation of molecular and cellular damage which leads to loss of physical function increasing infirmity, elevated risk of chronic illness, and ultimately death -. Address those issues by repairing the damage that has accumulated as a person ages and we are pretty much home and dry.

Although I don't think we will find a CURE for aging in the foreseeable future we won’t need one if we tackle aging from where our knowledge currently stands and in areas where we can expect to make significant progress within the next decade or so. Our strongest area of knowledge currently lies in that, although we understand the reasons why the body deteriorates with age, we do not have the requisite knowledge to intervene in a way that influences the actual ongoing metabolic processes. The primary concern is that what we already know that when it comes to metabolism what we do know is a fraction compared to what we don’t putting us in a very weak position to find a true cure. That is the bad news but the good news is that the area in which we are fairly strong is that we know the types of damage which occur through the aging process hence if we could repair the damage rather than halt it and just leave the body to pretty much carry on as it is albeit with regular repair and maintenance interventions every decade or so we would not have to understand the bodies metabolic processes in order to wind back the clock. Whilst this will not be a cure it would effectively be a shortcut to radical life extension as I will explain in detail shortly.

I am often asked "How long before we can cure aging?" to understand let’s keep in mind that we are already adding two months to life expectancy every year (or 5 hours per day) and this has been consistent for the last 30 years or so. If we then consider that many people including myself see better than a 50% chance of controlling aging within 20 years the whole issue starts to become very interesting. As far as the time span for a true cure, I would hazard a guess that it is at least 100 years away. The alternative approach is to aim at controlling aging and repairing the accumulated damage and this should be our primary goal because we understand how the damage is laid down even though we understand very little about actually slowing aging or influencing metabolism as I mentioned earlier. This is the essence of Aubrey De Grey's SENS theory and what is referred to as the engineering approach, it is this route which holds the best prospect of success in the first half of this century. Having said that two other well-funded organizations are waging war on aging so when you factor those two into the equation things are looking very positive, the first company is Calico, which is an independent R&D biotech company established in 2013 by Google Inc. and Arthur D. Levinson and the other is Human Longevity Inc these two indicate that the field is attracting serious funding although we are not seeing anything positive so far from Calico after 5 years and 1.5 billion (probably misspent) dollars! Regardless these two are being followed by numerous other pharma companies such as Novartis, Unity biotech and many more, because an expanding number of these biotech companies both big and small are carrying out increasing amounts of research (often yielding positive results) clearly indicates we are at the beginning of a serious push being made to tackle the problems which aging poses to everyone currently alive.

Current breakthroughs in the area of telomere research relating to the lengthening of telomeres are interesting because the research is moving quite rapidly and clearly it is technically possible and highly probable it will translate into humans. The primary concern with the lengthening of telomeres used to lie in the theoretically elevated risk of cancer but this problem does not apply based on research in 2015 which you can see on the Stanford University website (19), as a researcher in aging I consider this research and some supporting and complementary research which has taken place at Harvard coupled with a additional research relating to a compounds that is related to Rapamycin tends to indicate that we are making significant progress in addressing the diseases of aging. Interestingly shortening of Telomeres was until recently perceived by many as being a result of aging and not causal but the research at Stanford clearly repudiates this and suggests that Dr Bill Andrews (5) was most likely correct all the way along.

As far as the mechanism of delivery to extend the telomeres the scientists at Stamford used modified messenger RNA so the whole process if it translates effectively into humans - and the evidence is suggesting it will - would be pretty straightforward especially when you consider the degree of extension which is 1000 nucleotides and the fact that the process which lengthens the telomeres is only active in the body for 48 hours meaning there is no significantly elevated risk of cancer due to the limited time during which proliferation of the cells could take place. Another company working in these areas is Bioviva (22) and Elizabeth Parish the CEO has even acted as a guinea pig to test the therapies.

Personally I am pretty confident that with SENS and other routes being explored such as the Telomere research above plus the breakthroughs in Senolytics show that we do not have to find a cure for aging itself, therefore, we bypass the problems that our lack of knowledge in the area of metabolism and the aging process creates because what Aubrey de Grey terms “engineered negligible senescence". Theoretically this approach could potentially extend life indefinitely while not actually curing the underlying aging process which is allowed to continue as normal. Repairing the damage means we do not need to understand all the processes of aging, only that we need to know enough to extend healthy lifespan by let’s say 30 years.

Many people say to me “so how would it work in practice?” It’s actually quite easy to follow as I will explain, let’s for the sake of argument assume you are 60 years old at the time of the first intervention, this early and fundamentally imperfect treatment will probably repair 75% of the damage accumulated so far. What happens now is that 10 years later you reach the chronological age of 70 but are actually only 45 years old from a biological perspective and also look and feel like a 45 year old. We now come to the vital key to the whole theory which is this, let's say 20 years after the first treatment, when you are chronologically 80 but biologically 55 years old, both your doctor and yourself realize that the damage that was not repaired in the first treatment combined with further damage accumulated over the 20 years since it was administered are again posing a potential health risk. At this point it’s time for another intervention. It is now that the progress in medicine comes into play because, by the time 20 years has gone by, anti-aging medicine will have moved on significantly and, whilst the first treatment bought you an extra 20 or 30 years by repairing a fair amount of the damage accumulated over 60 years of living, it did not repair it all, 20 years later progress will mean that the latest treatment will not only repair most of the new damage that has built up since the first intervention but also some of the damage that was not able to be repaired 20 years earlier, this means that although you are now chronologically 80 (but biologically in your 50s) after intervention number two whilst you will have aged 20 years chronologically since the first treatment you will be biologically younger after the second treatment than you were after the first.

The above example is the essence of Aubrey de Grey's theory and pretty much any other theory based on rejuvenation and damage repair, essentially, it's a shortcut to radical life extension. It isn’t a cure but it acknowledges that it does not need to be because it simply buys time and leads to a situation where regular interventions at 15/20 years intervals with increasingly effective and comprehensive treatments could potentially extend life virtually indefinitely.

So the big question, will it happen? My opinion is that we are well on the way in a number of areas such as gene therapy, stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, senolytic drugs and numerous other types regenerative medicine such as the research involving telomeres I mentioned above. Whilst progress depends on funding a number of factors will drive things forward, also interest is increasing among both Scientists and the general population as well as wealthy philanthropists because it is becoming clear aging can be addressed and nobody wants to become sick and frail due to degenerative aging. Of all the factors driving things forward from a government perspective (although they are not consciously fighting aging itself) is that the baby boomers born between 1945 and 1965 are now aged between 53 and 73 and this will place increasing demands on healthcare systems, in fact we are starting to see it already, when you consider the oldest baby boomers might well live to 88 at which point the youngest are 68 you can see that for the health services we are looking at a perfect storm where the costs will not be sustainable (23). The most important thing to keep in mind here is that the average person costs more in medical expenditure in the last year of their life than in all the earlier years put together and this cost is wasted because ultimately they die anyway. Also the number of workers is declining in most developed countries which means that we need to keep the existing population working and productive for as long as possible.

A lot of people cite overpopulation as a reason not to address aging but contrary to many peoples belief the population is not rising worldwide, although it is rising in Asia and Africa, the picture is very different elsewhere as you can see below in the 20 countries where the population is falling with the annual rates of decline and projections of total reduction by 2050 indicated. Of course automation will potentially address some of the problems regarding a shortage of workers but that is not the whole picture because towns will become de-populated, real estate prices will crash etc, just take Latvia as an example this is not some third world banana republic but a small EU member state with a current population of just under 2 million people which by 2050 will fall to just over one and a half million.

These are just two reasons there a potential nightmares ahead but jointly they pose a serious economic problem to many governments worldwide although the exact impact will vary from country to country.

Probably at this stage you are wondering what time-frame does he put on it? My estimate based on current research is that we will be pretty much able to treat and manage aging within 20 years given sufficient motivation, appropriate research and robust funding which is starting to flow with Google Calico and PayPal founder Peter Thiel on board with SENS plus other wealthy individuals who are waking up to the fact this is something which is possible and no longer in the realms of Sci-Fi. Many of the therapies are progressing quite well already as I have outlined earlier, we are making good advances in stem cell therapies, senolytics, gene therapies and tissue engineering the fact remains though that without a comprehensive intervention targeting all of the types of damage that arise due to aging the treatments individually will most likely just allow a person to grind on for an addition 5 or 6 years during which they will probably have a poor quality of life.

Of course there are routes other than the engineering approach advocated by the SENS Research Foundation (1) and I think even Dr Aubrey de Grey knows SENS is only a means to get a foot on the ladder, clearly once SENS strategies are perfected they will certainly save millions of lives and prevent a great deal of suffering so they deserve everyones support because they are the most likely interventions to be deployed first. As I see it, There are five technologies which will ultimately lead to radical life extension during the course of this century, these are advanced Biotechnology which encompasses treatments such as SENS, Nanotechnology, Advanced Robotics, Gene therapies and Robust Artificial Intelligence often just referred to just as AI combined with whole brain emulation. The effect these technologies will have on life extension differs greatly but my guess is that there are two potential approaches which are likely to come to fruition first, number one is SENS which is biotechnology and as I see it potentially likely to reach the implementation stage within perhaps 20 years but not more that 30, the other is a combination of robust artificial intelligence and nanotechnology combined with whole brain emulation which is likely 30 to 50 years away. Whole brain emulation is where the brain is uploaded to a digital medium and increasingly enhanced and replaced with non-biological components until it reaches a stage where the non-biological components can model the biological part so accurately the original brains loss would be irrelevant from a functional perspective. Personally, I feel the outcome long term will ultimately be a combination of the five technologies, the crucial point is that each of these technologies individually has the potential to get us to where we need to go. What this means is that for the development of radical life extension to fail all of these technologies must also fail and that simply won’t happen, hence my guess is we will reach the stage of having a decisive level of control over the aging process within 20 years. Whilst probably not all of the technologies I described above would be sufficiently developed at that point the road ahead for those that aren't will already be very clear.

Even when considering the above we must also factor in that there is also a very significant possibility that we could find a faster route, for example treatments to lengthen telomeres might have an even greater benefit than assumed or maybe gene therapies and senolytics will progress faster than expected and yield significantly greater results than anticipated, these are all wildcards, another one to factor is that maybe we will make multiple breakthroughs of the same significant as CRISPR-cas9 (6) all of these could lead to significantly enhanced abilities to both address aging and to carry out life changing biomedical repairs.

If you are unsure whether this is a war worth fighting consider this, When the war on aging is won (and it's a case of when not if) over 100,000 people per day would be saved! This is because, of the 160,000 people who die each day, two thirds die from aging. This is a staggering figure and what this means is that, of nearly 60 million people who die each year, 40 million die from age related issues. I believe we will achieve significant positive results within the next decade in research on mice and that the knowledge acquired will then be transferred to humans, hopefully we will end the horrific descent into senility and old age of the millions of people who linger in retirement homes and suffer the indignities that come with the passing years.

Conquering aging is pretty much the same as beating any other disease, although aging is a complex issue involving many different processes, that does not mean though that it is not a realistic goal to render it a chronic albeit manageable condition within a timeframe to benefit the majority of people alive now.

Not only is it possible, but it is happening. If we step back and take a 200 year view, science has significantly increase our lifespan, and that scientific process continues. Life expectancy as doubled since 1800 owing to improved public health measures, antibiotics, vaccinations, nutrition, and overall good medical care. Today, in 2018, many lifestyle behaviors have a strong impact on life expectancy and health, such as smoking, alcohol, diet, and exercise.

Our ability to diagnose and treat areas of disease like heart disease and cancer has greatly increased over the past 50 years.

Emerging medical technologies like using DNA based immunology for cancer treatment will continue to increase lifespan.

The main issue in the US about life expectancy is the high cost and lack of universal access to healthcare, especially when compared to other advanced economies.

Life SPAN is the world record. The record is 123 years. For decades the oldest living human has been 116. The record is in no danger of being broken at the moment.

Life span is at lest partially genetic. To have a very good chance of breaking the record you would need to be born with very well understood genetic engineering. You would have to be born at least after 2050.

Levinson and the other is Human Longevity Inc these two indicate that the field is attracting serious funding although we are not seeing anything positive so far from Calico after 5 years and 1.5 billion (probably misspent) dollars! Regardless these two are being followed by numerous other pharma companies such as Novartis, Unity biotech and many more, because an expanding number of these biotech companies both big and small are carrying out increasing amounts of research (often yielding positive results) clearly indicates we are at the beginning of a serious push being made to tackle the problems which aging poses to everyone currently alive.

Current breakthroughs in the area of telomere research relating to the lengthening of telomeres are interesting because the research is moving quite rapidly and clearly it is technically possible and highly probable it will translate into humans. The primary concern with the lengthening of telomeres used to lie in the theoretically elevated risk of cancer but this problem does not apply based on research in 2015 which you can see on the Stanford University website (19), as a researcher in aging I consider this research and some supporting and complementary research which has taken place at Harvard coupled with a additional research relating to a compounds that is related to Rapamycin tends to indicate that we are making significant progress in addressing the diseases of aging. Interestingly shortening of Telomeres was until recently perceived by many as being a result of aging and not causal but the research at Stanford clearly repudiates this and suggests that Dr Bill Andrews (5) was most likely correct all the way along.

As far as the mechanism of delivery to extend the telomeres the scientists at Stamford used modified messenger RNA so the whole process if it translates effectively into humans - and the evidence is suggesting it will - would be pretty straightforward especially when you consider the degree of extension which is 1000 nucleotides and the fact that the process which lengthens the telomeres is only active in the body for 48 hours meaning there is no significantly elevated risk of cancer due to the limited time during which proliferation of the cells could take place. Another company working in these areas is Bioviva (22) and Elizabeth Parish the CEO has even acted as a guinea pig to test the therapies.

Personally I am pretty confident that with SENS and other routes being explored such as the Telomere research above plus the breakthroughs in Senolytics show that we do not have to find a cure for aging itself, therefore, we bypass the problems that our lack of knowledge in the area of metabolism and the aging process creates because what Aubrey de Grey terms “engineered negligible senescence". Theoretically this approach could potentially extend life indefinitely while not actually curing the underlying aging process which is allowed to continue as normal. Repairing the damage means we do not need to understand all the processes of aging, only that we need to know enough to extend healthy lifespan by let’s say 30 years.

Many people say to me “so how would it work in practice?” It’s actually quite easy to follow as I will explain, let’s for the sake of argument assume you are 60 years old at the time of the first intervention, this early and fundamentally imperfect treatment will probably repair 75% of the damage accumulated so far. What happens now is that 10 years later you reach the chronological age of 70 but are actually only 45 years old from a biological perspective and also look and feel like a 45 year old. We now come to the vital key to the whole theory which is this, let's say 20 years after the first treatment, when you are chronologically 80 but biologically 55 years old, both your doctor and yourself realize that the damage that was not repaired in the first treatment combined with further damage accumulated over the 20 years since it was administered are again posing a potential health risk. At this point it’s time for another intervention. It is now that the progress in medicine comes into play because, by the time 20 years has gone by, anti-aging medicine will have moved on significantly and, whilst the first treatment bought you an extra 20 or 30 years by repairing a fair amount of the damage accumulated over 60 years of living, it did not repair it all, 20 years later progress will mean that the latest treatment will not only repair most of the new damage that has built up since the first intervention but also some of the damage that was not able to be repaired 20 years earlier, this means that although you are now chronologically 80 (but biologically in your 50s) after intervention number two whilst you will have aged 20 years chronologically since the first treatment you will be biologically younger after the second treatment than you were after the first.

The above example is the essence of Aubrey de Grey's theory and pretty much any other theory based on rejuvenation and damage repair, essentially, it's a shortcut to radical life extension. It isn’t a cure but it acknowledges that it does not need to be because it simply buys time and leads to a situation where regular interventions at 15/20 years intervals with increasingly effective and comprehensive treatments could potentially extend life virtually indefinitely.

So the big question, will it happen? My opinion is that we are well on the way in a number of areas such as gene therapy, stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, senolytic drugs and numerous other types regenerative medicine such as the research involving telomeres I mentioned above. Whilst progress depends on funding a number of factors will drive things forward, also interest is increasing among both Scientists and the general population as well as wealthy philanthropists because it is becoming clear aging can be addressed and nobody wants to become sick and frail due to degenerative aging. Of all the factors driving things forward from a government perspective (although they are not consciously fighting aging itself) is that the baby boomers born between 1945 and 1965 are now aged between 53 and 73 and this will place increasing demands on healthcare systems, in fact we are starting to see it already, when you consider the oldest baby boomers might well live to 88 at which point the youngest are 68 you can see that for the health services we are looking at a perfect storm where the costs will not be sustainable (23). The most important thing to keep in mind here is that the average person costs more in medical expenditure in the last year of their life than in all the earlier years put together and this cost is wasted because ultimately they die anyway. Also the number of workers is declining in most developed countries which means that we need to keep the existing population working and productive for as long as possible.

A lot of people cite overpopulation as a reason not to address aging but contrary to many peoples belief the population is not rising worldwide, although it is rising in Asia and Africa, the picture is very different elsewhere as you can see below in the 20 countries where the population is falling with the annual rates of decline and projections of total reduction by 2050 indicated. Of course automation will potentially address some of the problems regarding a shortage of workers but that is not the whole picture because towns will become de-populated, real estate prices will crash etc, just take Latvia as an example this is not some third world banana republic but a small EU member state with a current population of just under 2 million people which by 2050 will fall to just over one and a half million.

These are just two reasons there a potential nightmares ahead but jointly they pose a serious economic problem to many governments worldwide although the exact impact will vary from country to country.

Probably at this stage you are wondering what time-frame does he put on it? My estimate based on current research is that we will be pretty much able to treat and manage aging within 20 years given sufficient motivation, appropriate research and robust funding which is starting to flow with Google Calico and PayPal founder Peter Thiel on board with SENS plus other wealthy individuals who are waking up to the fact this is something which is possible and no longer in the realms of Sci-Fi. Many of the therapies are progressing quite well already as I have outlined earlier, we are making good advances in stem cell therapies, senolytics, gene therapies and tissue engineering the fact remains though that without a comprehensive intervention targeting all of the types of damage that arise due to aging the treatments individually will most likely just allow a person to grind on for an addition 5 or 6 years during which they will probably have a poor quality of life.

Of course there are routes other than the engineering approach advocated by the SENS Research Foundation (1) and I think even Dr Aubrey de Grey knows SENS is only a means to get a foot on the ladder, clearly once SENS strategies are perfected they will certainly save millions of lives and prevent a great deal of suffering so they deserve everyones support because they are the most likely interventions to be deployed first. As I see it, There are five technologies which will ultimately lead to radical life extension during the course of this century, these are advanced Biotechnology which encompasses treatments such as SENS, Nanotechnology, Advanced Robotics, Gene therapies and Robust Artificial Intelligence often just referred to just as AI combined with whole brain emulation. The effect these technologies will have on life extension differs greatly but my guess is that there are two potential approaches which are likely to come to fruition first, number one is SENS which is biotechnology and as I see it potentially likely to reach the implementation stage within perhaps 20 years but not more that 30, the other is a combination of robust artificial intelligence and nanotechnology combined with whole brain emulation which is likely 30 to 50 years away. Whole brain emulation is where the brain is uploaded to a digital medium and increasingly enhanced and replaced with non-biological components until it reaches a stage where the non-biological components can model the biological part so accurately the original brains loss would be irrelevant from a functional perspective. Personally, I feel the outcome long term will ultimately be a combination of the five technologies, the crucial point is that each of these technologies individually has the potential to get us to where we need to go. What this means is that for the development of radical life extension to fail all of these technologies must also fail and that simply won’t happen, hence my guess is we will reach the stage of having a decisive level of control over the aging process within 20 years. Whilst probably not all of the technologies I described above would be sufficiently developed at that point the road ahead for those that aren't will already be very clear.

Even when considering the above we must also factor in that there is also a very significant possibility that we could find a faster route, for example treatments to lengthen telomeres might have an even greater benefit than assumed or maybe gene therapies and senolytics will progress faster than expected and yield significantly greater results than anticipated, these are all wildcards, another one to factor is that maybe we will make multiple breakthroughs of the same significant as CRISPR-cas9 (6) all of these could lead to significantly enhanced abilities to both address aging and to carry out life changing biomedical repairs.

If you are unsure whether this is a war worth fighting consider this, When the war on aging is won (and it's a case of when not if) over 100,000 people per day would be saved! This is because, of the 160,000 people who die each day, two thirds die from aging. This is a staggering figure and what this means is that, of nearly 60 million people who die each year, 40 million die from age related issues. I believe we will achieve significant positive results within the next decade in research on mice and that the knowledge acquired will then be transferred to humans, hopefully we will end the horrific descent into senility and old age of the millions of people who linger in retirement homes and suffer the indignities that come with the passing years.

Conquering aging is pretty much the same as beating any other disease, although aging is a complex issue involving many different processes, that does not mean though that it is not a realistic goal to render it a chronic albeit manageable condition within a timeframe to benefit the majority of people alive now.

The telomere region is getting shorter and shorter. That causes us to age.

Therefore, human lifespan can be increased not by ‘buttock or facial injections of anti-aging’ but by finding ways to prevent the underlying cause of aging.

The ways to stop shortening the telomere ends is what can help us to stop aging and thereby increase human lifespan through scientific methods.

There is no proven way yet other than exercise which seems to reduce disease incidence or how early disease hits. Other things being worked on are calorie reduction in various forms (intermittant eating with fasting periods, total calorie reduction) which has been shown to extend life in yeast up to dogs but evidence on monkeys so far shows fewer aging indicators rather than additional years (monkeys live longer than yeast). Drugs to mimic calorie reduction are in the works; look up rampamycin on google.

Aging is not well-understood and may involve many processes hard to hit at once. Telomere shortening is one theory of why aging occurs. DNA copying errors another. Increasing mitochondria in cells is another.

The value of Bitcoin increase as more people buy it. However, it also decreases as people sell, which is why people tend to think it is volatile, yet it has increased by 976.61% this past year!

The value of Bitcoin comes down to basic economics: scarcity, utility, supply and demand.

Bitcoin is similar to gold, in the sense that it is scare - there is a limited supply - it will be capped at 21 million Bitcoins (that is all that can ever exist).

Besides this it is also useful - it is divisible and a fraction of it can be used to pay someone for something. The transactions are also verifiable, thanks to the Blockchain.

Therefore, it is both scares and is useful, hence its value.

The value of it Bitcoin is dependent on its price which is determined by the market in which it trades - this means its value is linked to supply and demand - just like any other commodity.

I would suggest investing in Bitcoin now in some way or another:

In a purely business or economic sense is the classic, “supply and demand”. What is the market willing to pay? Increased demand correlates with increased value and decreased demand correlates with decreased value. In the case of Bitcoin, also how much is the quantity or market cap? Bitcoin has a smaller cap relatively in the market making it a limited resource if you will. The “value” can also give way to price manipulation wherein if one or numerous individuals has the means to purchase large quantities the price goes up and then they sell at the higher price. I believe this is referred to as “pump and dump” in circles. When the price drops because of volatility they come back and purchase at a reduced price again making profits for themselves in various ways.
