When done well, retargeting your site's shoppers with display ads generates very competitive returns. Search, affiliate, and comparison shopping engine marketing have traditionally been the major drivers of paid traffic, but a few key improvements in bidding technology, namely real-time bidding, have dramatically increased display ad ROAS.
Wikipedia Retargeting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beh...
First though, let's keep in mind that the question pre-supposes that you're measuring ROAS. There are many ways of looking at ROAS from paid acquisition channels, the most popular being last click attribution. This means that 100% of the credit for a sale goes to the marketing channel that a user clicked last.
This is dangerous for the e-tailer/advertiser. For example, check out the Walmart page on RetailMeNot.com:
Anytime someone clicks one of those links, the affiliate gets credit. You often don't even know what deal you get until you click. While the shopper may click this link last before buying, that click may have absolutely no impact on his/her purchasing decision.
So the real question becomes what channel provides you the most cost-effective incremental sales, those that wouldn't have taken place without that channel. The way to measure this is through an A:B test where you turn off a single marketing channel for a subset of users as the control, and see how much your conversion rate increases for the experiment group with the same marketing channel turned on. This gives you a true reflection of reality and ROAS for the marketing channel tested.
In absence of an A:B testing framework like the one I described, I'd recommend looking at multi-touch attribution with a strong dose of common sense. That is, trust your gut more than the numbers because in absence of an A:B test, the numbers aren't a true reflection of reality.
Back to retargeting, the major players in this space for large e-tailers are TellApart, Criteo, ValueClick, and Akamai. I work for TellApart and am happy to talk more about our retargeting product offline. If you're a small or mid-size e-tailer (outside of the top Internet Retailer 500), I'd recommend checking out AdRoll's retargeting product.

Any product promoted by an authority with numerous followers will have high conversion, as well as email marketing to existing newsletter subscribers.
What has worked great for us in the past (beyond AdCenter & AdWords), is an outreach program to bloggers in our (or our client's) niche. Giving free product to authors and bloggers and asking for a review has a cost associated (product & shipping) so technically it's still paid advertising. If a popular blogger says "you have to try this product", your ROI will be through the roof.
I've seen higher ROAS on AdCenter (pre-Yahoo!) and lower costs. Ideally, optimize your keywords around behavior. For example, using the word "Buy" as a modifier pulls in searchers in the purchase phase of the buying cycle and is more likely to produce higher CPA rates. Though there aren't as many searches, so you might think about other modifiers that result in hitting buyers at the right time.
If you're B2B, you might try advertising on Business.com. Our account rep, Linda, has always done an incredible job setting up our account, importing our campaigns from other vendors, and assisting with conversion tracking.
Content-targeting can be an awesome tool if you hit the right destinations. Kontera and Vibrant Media might have a good starter campaign plan for you to test the water a bit.
Here's a snipped of success from a large retailer's GA account I'm staring at right now (in order first by net conversion):
- AdWords (3rd highest ROAS)
- AdCenter (2nd highest ROAS)
- Business.com (highest ROAS)

WEB TARGETED TRAFFIC from Web Targeted Traffic .com - is a certified website traffic supplier providing 100% real human visitors to its clients. The company operates with their trusted network of partners that deliver high quality human traffic and ensures that every campaign is prioritized.
First, make sure you’re buying the best traffic you can afford. Don’t go for low quality, high volume options just because they’re within your budget. Think of it this way; a traffic bot has a conversion rate of 0. A low quality exchange will have a low conversion rate, while Facebook or Google will have a higher conversion rate, with the numbers varying depending on your optimization.
Avec trafic payant, you have one benefit over organic traffic; you know the people coming in are landing on your landing page, rather than any old page on your site. Furthermore, you know they all potentially have a chance to convert. After all, they clicked your ads to get to your site.

Honestly the only “quality” traffic sources you are going to find are places that your target audience hangs out.
For example if a website is about automotive repair but your audience is about mommy blogging, chances are that site would be low quality traffic for you. While if an auto parts store were to advertise on that site it would likely be very high quality.
What it comes down to is relevance of the audience you are trying to target and which action you are wanting them to take.
If you haven’t done so already, I highly suggest creating a marketing plan 1 to help you identify your target audience, so you can better research paid traffic 2 opportunities that would best serve your business.

For me personally, that was Babylon Traffic. I engaged their services last fall I think it was in the middle of the October or something. We launched a new site and wanted to be seen all over the web. So basically we needed to get some quality traffic to our domain and a lot of it. Which is exactly what was provided to us Babylon Traffic. Now when it comes to numbers we approximately tripled what we invested in them so I guess it was a good deal for both of us. There you go now you have some kind of idea what to expect if you decide to go with them, and that could happen by following this lien.
