NetHunt

NetHunt is a user-friendly email CRM inside Gmail for freelancers. It introduces a simple, yet effective concept. NetHunt lets you turn any email into a CRM record. This way, when a client or order email arrives into your inbox, you put it into the CRM folder with all of the related client data. The best part - there's no "other" app or service to keep open. The CRM database, pipelines and todo's - everything is available from inside Gmail.

While many systems concentrate heavily on sales purposes, NetHunt CRM has a very customizable structure so you can manage almost any type of activity in it; from sales and projects to customer support, real estate and software development.

Being a fully Gmail-based CRM, NetHunt also adds a marketing automation platform to your inbox, letting you send personalized mass mail messages, which openings you can track. If you're a Gmail user, you'll be quick to get used to how NetHunt CRM works. And with all those features included (with no limitations), it costs only $25 for a team of up to 5 people, making it one of the most affordable systems on the market.

Remember the Milk

Reminders can get annoying, but Remember the Milk app does it right. This to-do app helps you free up space in your mind for truly important tasks. You can create subtasks, set recurring tasks, and define filters for different types of items.

You can put tasks in different lists, specify due dates, and set importance levels right from your keyboard, making this a fast and efficient way to manage your freelance tasks. It’s available for most major platforms, so you can get reminders on any device.

Todoist

Todoist is another great option for staying on top of your tasks. Its clean and simple design helps you focus on the tasks you need to get done instead of overwhelming you with buttons and options. You can create projects with tasks and subtasks, set recurring deadlines, get notifications and reminders, and organize everything with labels and filters.

You can easily hop from one device to the other, and all your lists will be in sync.

TeuxDeux

The name of this app may seem a bit tricky (clue: it’s not French), but in fact, it’s one of the simplest to-do apps on the market. TeuxDeux promises to be as easy to use as jotting down tasks on a piece of paper.

You can input tasks with deadlines and recurring dates, create custom lists, and get reminders for important events. It’s available as a browser-based tool and on your iPhone.

Focus Booster

Focus Booster is a simple tool for using the pomodoro technique. It’s all about working in powerful, focused intervals. Pomodoro helps overcome distractions by timing your work cycle. By getting used to working in intervals, you can also better enjoy breaks. Focus Booster comes with built-in time tracking, so you also can take care of logging hours with ease.

Hubstaff

Hubstaff is a great choice for keeping track of your work hours and analyzing your daily activities to improve your productivity. You can run the time tracker in the background and use the screenshot functionality to check on yourself to make sure you’re not wasting your time on distractions.

You can issue invoices and make payments straight from the app, so it can also save you time spent on administrative tasks. Hubstaff integrates with most major work tools, so it’ll work seamlessly with your existing workflow.

If you’re serious about removing distractions and improving your productivity, Freedom is the app for you. It blocks websites and apps that take away your focus from what’s important. You can create your own schedule and select the enemies of your optimal performance. And it works on all your devices to make sure you don’t get sneaky.

Proposer

Proposify is another useful tool for crafting great client proposals. Instead of using complex design apps, you can simply input the relevant information. Ready-made and custom templates help you stand out from the crowd. With Proposify, clients can also sign the offer straight from the proposal.

Qwilr

With Qwilr, you don’t simply send a PDF proposal to a prospect. You can craft a beautiful and interactive experience that displays your proposal as a website. Elegant, eye-catching templates help you stand out from the dozens of traditional proposals your potential clients are sure to receive. And standing out is the first step in landing that job.

Invoicely

Invoicely is a feature-rich invoice platform. You can track time, business expenses, and vehicle mileage right from the same app. After issuing invoices, you can accept payments within the tool. You can take care of discounts, taxes, and even shipping. With Invoicely, you can control all your finances in one dashboard.

Vague

Wave is a beautifully designed accounting app that you can easily fall in love with (yes, I put love and accounting in the same sentence!). The platform allows you to send invoices, receipts and estimates. You can also accept credit card payments. Wave provides a single dashboard for managing all of your freelance finances in a single place—and that’s a big time-saver.

TextExpander

Do you use the same phrases in emails and instant messages all the time? Do you type the same things over and over? TextExpander can make that process much faster by turning specific combinations of keys into words or sentences.

If you write “Thanks very much, and let me know” all the time, you can have TextExpander write that when you type “tvm.” It doesn’t sound like much, but you can use it for words, phrases, or entire emails. You don’t realize how much time you spend writing the same things until you don’t have to do it anymore.

Here is my list of the most useful tools for freelancers:

TMetric is a time tracking web app for both freelancers and big companies. Great control over time intervals and projects’ budgets, flexible billable rates, crystal clear reporting, transparent team monitoring and lots of integrations, all wrapped up into a light interface.

It’s a very simple, flexible, and free way to organize your work. It can be used by you alone or in conjunction with a client. It’s used by everyone from freelancers to agencies to big companies like Google and Adobe.

Medium is a publishing platform noted for its great design and user experience, as well as its network sharing and finding great articles. Medium is used by individual and companies, and can even replace your own blog!

All freelancers (but especially writers) need a full suite of office tools for their personal computer. While Google Docs offers a web based alternative, many folks like storing documents on their hard drive or external memory device. Instead of paying the cost of Microsoft Office, why not try the excellent and free OpenOffice alternative?

Remember The Milk has definitely created some buzz recently, and with it’s Gmail addon, you can now access it through your email, which you are probably spending too much time in…

RTM is simply one of the best task managers out there, with tools that can remind you from almost any device, set up specific location reminders, plan your time in advanced, and work together with others to get things done. An overall must have tool in my opinion.

Bonjour!

Great question for starters! Going freelance can be one of the most rewarding career changes you will ever make. I have asked the same question before but honestly didn’t get help instantly. So I learned things the hard way. I am going to try my best to help you out.

Things I think you will be needing:

Time Management - the most important currency for a freelancer is time. You have to learn how to manage your time wisely and as effectively.

A great Proposals - To attract clients you have to have a proposal. How would you “show off” your goodies (service/product)

Backup Storage - You cannot lose a single file. Make sure to have Icloud or Dropbox.

Organize yourself - If you’re organized, your business will be organized. A well organized person attracts more positive people.

Email - When you are a freelancer your inbox becomes the hub of your business so it better be organized.

Organize your finance - You are nothing unless you can keep track of the money you are making and spending.

But to truly get started, what you need is A job - You need a job that will suffice your basic needs during your transition period. A job which will pay your bills, food, etc.

Ask yourself what will you do to start growing your finances while waiting? I suggest you Invest. You have to learn how to make your sleeping money in the bank work for you. Make money work to your advantage, INVEST NOW.

FYI, Freelancers will make up half the workforce by the year 2020. That is actually a comforting news for freelancers like myself.

Je vous souhaite le meilleur!

Before your pour many hours, money and resources into building anything yourself, I would recommend you to take two other steps first (if you haven’t already):

  1. Validate your business idea
  2. Build a Minimum Viable Product using a platform approach

Laisse-moi expliquer:

Have you validated your business idea?
I really recommend doing this first. It would be a shame to find out after launch that there’s something wrong with your idea. There’s a few ways to do this; this comprehensive article goes through them in detail. To summarize the main points:

  1. List all your core assumptions
Who is your target audience? How do you find these people? Etc.
    1. Find potential users and interview them
is this a big enough problem for them that they would be willing to pay for someone to solve it?
    2. Study search data
Quite often a key assumption to validate is about the market size and the distribution channels.

Build an MVP, by using a platform.
Now that you got your basic idea checked, it’s time to test it out into practice. Using a platform approach will allow you to really focus on testing the business and idea, rather than spending too much time on the operational and technical setup. A platform will be pretty much ready for you to go, some tweaking aside. Some things you should consider when deciding on the platform:

  1. Does the provider of the software platform offer hosting, server monitoring, automatic software updates, backups, payment bureaucracy, and technical support?
It comes often as a surprise especially to non-technical people how big hurdle this actually is. Many people think you simply install a chunk of code to your server as a one time thing, and that's it. That's not the way it works. If you want to run things on your own server, you really need to have a technical person in your team, since there's always something to do.
  2. Is the software you're planning to use open source?
This is quite important. If you're using proprietary (non-open-source) software, you're locked in to the services of the marketplace provider. If you later wish to hire a developer team and build new features, that might not be possible. With open source, you can just always move to your own server and continue development there
  3. Prix.
What's best obviously depends on your budget. In general, I think that a big payment upfront is a bad sign. You want a software provider who has invested in your success, which means that it should be relatively affordable to get started, but you will pay more if you are successful.

Since you wish to build a B2C marketplace in the spirit of Amazon or Flipkart, there are three platforms I would recommend you to take a look at: Marketplacer, Mirakl or Izberg. They all focus on this type of marketplaces and offer you a hosted experience. However, their solutions are not for the smallest budgets, and they're also not open source if I'm correct. For something simpler, you could take a look at this Shopify extension or the various WordPress & Magento marketplace plugins out there.

For those who want to build a multi-vendor store but more in the spirit of eBay or Etsy (lots of small providers), I also encourage to take a look at our marketplace platform Sharetribe. We offer quite an affordable SaaS solution you can use to set up your site in a single day without tech skills, but our platform is also open source, which provides additional flexibility. If you wish to take a look at Sharetribe, you can sign up for a free trial ici . There's no commitment required, so it's really quick to try it out.
